I Horisont (DR1 TV) så jeg for en uges tid siden en udsendelse om et lille samfund i Alaska, Kivalina.
Det er et – blandt mange andre – samfund hvis indbyggere er inuitter (eskimoer) som lever næsten helt isoleret fra resten af verden – som også mange lignende samfund på Grønland.
For at overleve, er de stadig nødt til at tage ud på sæljagt, om end de nu til dags får et supplement fra den omgivende verden, dels i form af fattighjælp (som det kaldes), dels i form af (nogle) fødevarer.
Men et langt stykke hen ad vejen må de klare sig selv.
De har også en lokal administration, ledet af en landsby-øverste – tror hun har titel af stammehøvding eller lignende.
Det er tankevækkende, at der stadig findes samfund, der langt hen ad vejen er ‘left to their own devices’ både i henseende til (fødevare)forsyning, og ledelse.
Det kunne være spændende at forske i, hvordan sådanne samfund fungerer – måske som inspiration for nogle øko-samfund, der også eksperimenterer med selvforsyning og selvforvaltning.
Selvberoende uden at afskære sig fra verden.
Det er een ting.
Når Kevalina er kommet på verdens dagsorden, er det fordi de er ofre for den globale opvarmning, og de har besluttet at prøve at gøre noget ved det.
Byens problem er, at den ligger på en lav tange der rager ud i havet, så når vandstanden stiger, og isen smelter, går det galt.
I første omgang trues byen af oversvømmelse hver gang der er kraftige storme, på sigt kommer området simpelt hen til at stå under vand.
Desuden er husene bygget direkte på permafrost-laget, som altså udgør husenes fundament.
Så når permafrosten smelter, ser det skidt ud. Husene bliver simpelt hen ustabile.
Staten Alaska nægter at give indbyggerne støtte til at flytte byen, da dét kan skabe præcedens for de talrige andre små-samfund op langs kysten. Mange står i samme situation.
Derfor har indbyggerne i Kivalina valgt intet mindre end at sagsøge en række af de mest CO2-udledende selskaber i USA, med et erstatningskrav for at ødelægge deres livsgrundlag.

Det var en ganske interssant udsendelse, og problemstillingen er i allerhøjeste grad aktuel hvis vi seriøst vil drage omsorg for vor planet. dog kunne det undre mig at samtlige beboere på den lille ø alle drønede rund på benzinosende motorcykler. Øén var jo ikke meget større end en fodboldbane…
